Going through my magazines, looking for collage pieces I came across a few beautiful faces. They inspired me to add to the 29 faces challenge. I dont like the way the came out, but I wanted to share never the less. Most times we are our worst critic so. I guess I want my faces to be more realistic, but without taking the time to add the detail, they look very cartoonish. The last one, I was so unhappy with, I did not even bother to show the inspiration photo.

Working Big

OMG, there is nothing greater than working big. To stand back and look at this hugeeee painting that you have created with simple colors and intuitive strokes. Its an amazing feeling while you are enjoying the process and just as amazing to stand back and look at what has been “created through you” as Tracy Verdugo says. I say through you because something so amazing cant come from me.

As I was painting, my kids started screaming, There is a frog in the house, there is a frog in the house. ( lol)

I have no idea how this little dude got in the house.

Lifebook Week #20

I think this weeks lifebook assignment has been my favorite. All though it is very simple, I like the fact that it is doodling and not another face to create.

Life book is supposed to capture our journey through the year, so I understand self portraits etc. But it has been challenging for me to incorporate the lessons with out drawing a per; thus I have gotten very behind due to my lack of motivate to sit and do the assignments.

Any who I wanted to share what I did do this morning. It was really fun, and prompted me to start another painting that I have been wanting to do, but was just not inspired to do.

I actually cheated a bit on the assignment. I used my new fluid acrylics instead of water color. They are so much fun !

Here Fishy Fishy

Its heating up here in Sunny California, and everyone is suiting up to swim, including yours truly. So I have been checking out some modest swim wear around the web. Inspired by the styles but not the designs I decided to sketch out a few of my own.

Think, water, swimming, snorkeling, diving, fish. ooohh fish. Tropical fish, pretty fish, colorful fish, henna fish. So here is a sneak peek into what I came up with.

Now to shop for fabric. This is all ready fun. Perhaps I will design two, maybe three. My daughter needs a suit this year as well.

Looks like its time to get more sharpies.

29 Faces #7 & 8- Phenomenal Women

Alhumdulilah I did a small little contest and these two woman volunteered their photos for my 29 faces challenge.

It was a challenge. I am faced out. Faces is not really my art forte’ but I knew it would be fun and increase my skills. I enjoyed drawing these ladies, but painting them was very challenging. I don’ t have the right color paints for skin pigmentation and so I winged it. I also need practice with my shading and proportions. Thanks ladies for being such great sports.

So I had a few makeup faces to do. I had not done any men so I decided to do this one. Can you guess who he is? If you can than inshallah I will do a pic of you. If you live in my house, you all ready know. ( lol) Most likely you wont figure it out. My drawings are very cartoon like.

29Faces #9- Elijah Juanye’

Alhumdulilah, for today’s 29 faces, I asked my youngest son Elijah to volunteer, and donate his face (lol)

Painting Elijah was really fun. I first took a pic of him with my web cam and used it for a reference. Next I started with getting the basic colors in.

Elijah loves green, so I made sure to use a lot of green. Next I did the shading and finally the details.

Who is Elijah?

Elijah is a 12 year old tween

Elijah is home schooled and in the 8th grade

Elijah enjoys reading, video games and inventing new inventions.

Elijah is studying to be a video game tester, an advance manufacturing engineer and inventor. He also wants to be a spy ninja

I used very simple materials since this is a page in my art journal and will most likely only be used as Elijahs FB and video gaming profile pic. ( lol)

Henna Sketchbook 5/8

Alhumdulilah I have been invited to Simply StepN Salon for a DIVA Day in June. ( exact date TBA)

So I have been doing henna doodles a little more often. My art work usually includes henna, but not in a way that was designed for the hands. So I have been brushing up on my henna skill and working to put together a small book of henna designs to use for the event. This will be my first henna event. I am looking forward to it.

This kids homework was done, and the house was pretty much clean. I had a few canvases sitting to the side, so I decided to put my sketchbook away and sketch on canvas today. Some of them came out nicely, some not so nice. But it was fun never the less. After distressing my jeans earlier this afternoon, I was inspired to distress some canvas. Yes Di-stress framed canvas. It was an experiment and I like home they turned out.

I still have my face for 29 days to work on. I think I will do that after dinner. Have a great evening, and dont forget to thrive in the moment, for today will be yesterday tomorrow.

I really enjoyed the process of drawing and then painting Eryka Badu. My kids say it looks like me, not her. Allahu Allam. ( Allah knows best) But it was fun never the less. I really missed using my soft pastels. They really let you spend and smoosh the colors together, and I love to paint with my fingers too.

I remember back in the day really admiring her and her fashion since. Her style has always been very ethnic, but different than anyone else. So I used to try and copy her. She would take a piece of fabric and do amazing things with it. She is also a very beautiful woman. So here is the process. It took me about an hour. Inshallah I will do another two and get caught up.

I first sketch it in pencil. A regular number two pencil that my kids use to do their homework than I focused on shading and getting the colors on the body with soft pastels. The cheap kind, you get from Michaels. Artist Loft Brand. Than Went in and did the details with my color pencils. I add a little water to the color pencil areas, and finally added the white to the eyes with a white out pen I bought from Winco on a grocery shopping trip. Oh, and than I added a fixative, because soft pastels are open for just about for ever. I love the texture of my finished piece. Its very RAW

That’s what I love about mixed media and expressive art. Supplies can be found anywhere and everywhere. Its all about the process and the energy you put into your creative work.
